Private lessons
A private lesson is a class for 1 to 6 students with one instructor: a private, a duet, or a trio. Instead of monthly tuition, it has a price per session, per student. It’s on the schedule and the roll like any other class.
Owners and admins create private lessons and set the price. Owners, admins, and front desk enroll students and handle cancelled sessions. Instructors see them and take attendance.
Create a private lesson
Click New class and choose Private or duet
Go to Schedule → Classes, click New class, then pick Private or duet at the top.
Fill in the lesson
- Name: like “Private · Yaz” or “Jazz duet · Kelly”.
- The instructor (required). The field uses your studio’s word, like Teacher or Coach.
- Students: 1 · Private, 2 · Duet, 3 · Trio, or up to 6.
- Per session ($): the price per session, per student.
Set the days and times
Pick the Days, Starts and Ends, and optional First class and Last class dates. Pick a Room if your studio uses them.
Click Create private lesson
Then enroll the students the same way as any class, with Enroll student. See Enroll students.
Private lessons are listed under Private lessons & duets at the bottom of the class list. A lesson with no price shows No price per session. To change the number of students later, owners and admins use the pencil next to Roster on the lesson’s page.
How privates are billed
When you post a month’s tuition, each student in a private lesson is charged the price per session for each session on the schedule that month. Cancelled and closed sessions aren’t billed. The bill line lists the session dates and who else is in the lesson.
You can also set or change the price on the Billing page under Monthly tuition, where privates show a price “/session”. See Billing.
When the studio cancels a session
For a private lesson, a session the studio cancels (or a closure) is owed back. A student’s own absence from a private lesson isn’t made up.
Owners, admins, and front desk see Missed sessions on the lesson’s page and Missed classes on the family page. For each cancelled session, you can:
Click Schedule makeup
Pick a Date and Time for an extra session and click Schedule makeup. It’s the same length as a usual session and must be on a day the lesson doesn’t already meet.
Or click Give a credit
Spotter suggests the session price if that session was billed. Pick a reason and click Give credit. The credit goes on the family’s bill.
A makeup session shows on the schedule, Today, and the roll, tagged Makeup session. It’s free when the session it replaces was already billed. A cancelled session gets a makeup or a credit, never both.
To take a makeup session off the schedule, click Remove makeup. Once attendance is taken for it, it stays.
Group classes work differently: students make up a missed class by joining another group class. See Absences and makeups.
